Diablo 3 some years later...

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

Diablo 3, as a game that has been around since 2012, still manages to maintain relevance and offer a thrilling gaming experience in 2023. This game has aged like a fine wine, and as someone who's been gaming since the 90s, I've seen plenty of titles come and go. Diablo 3, however, is one that has not just survived, but thrived, and for good reason.

The game's continued relevance can be attributed to several factors. First, Diablo 3 is characterized by extensive customization. Each of the five character classes offers around 100 different skills, which translates to a fresh experience for every playthrough. One can't help but be reminded of playing with LEGOs as a kid - the joy isn't just in building something, but in tearing it down and starting all over again with a whole new idea.

Furthermore, Diablo 3 offers an immense replayability factor, with the replayability of seasons being

limitless. The game offers new challenges and goals in each season, making every playthrough a brand new adventure. It's like an all-you-can-eat buffet, but instead of bloating and regret, you're left with satisfaction and anticipation for the next plate of demon-slaying action.

What would an RPG game be without loot? Diablo 3 excels at hitting that endorphin rush perfectly, with the accumulation of loot being an intensely satisfying aspect of gameplay. Finding a legendary piece of armor or weapon feels like winning the lottery, but without the fear of distant relatives suddenly popping up to be your new best friend.

The replayability of Diablo 3 doesn't end with just restarting the game. It features Rifts, loot, and enemy-filled dungeons that end with a formidable boss fight. For those who enjoy that thrill of "just one more round", this game can quickly become addictive. It's like potato chips - you can't just have one...or ten...or a hundred.

On the other hand, the endgame of Diablo 3 holds huge appeal through its loot and gear system, with full sets offering a sense of completion that's a gamer's equivalent of a neat freak finally getting everything in its right place. While the campaign is only 18 hours long, it's estimated to take over 150 hours to see all the game has to offer. That's like watching the entire Lord of the Rings Extended Edition trilogy almost 20 times - talk about a commitment.

The combat system in Diablo 3 is a part of what keeps the gameplay interesting. The skills are the legendary powers that define the heroes, and they are specialized to complement each class’s talents. Imagine having the ability to spin like a whirlwind and smash monsters into gory paste - it's every 90's kid's dream of becoming a superhero come true. And the best part? These skills are not just about offense; some are defensive and others are utility-focused, offering a balanced approach to gameplay.

Most skills are powered by a class-specific resource, a bit like the fuel for your hero's awesome skill-car. Each class has its own unique resource such as Fury for the Barbarian, Hatred/Discipline for the Demon Hunter, and so on. Running out of resources in the middle of a fight can be a real party pooper, so manage them wisely, grasshopper.

To maximize the use of your skills, place them in your action bar. This allows easy access to your skills during combat, kind of like keeping your favorite snacks within arm's reach when you're binge-watching a series.

The damage dealt by an offensive skill is not always the same - it depends on your weapon’s Damage range and your skill’s damage multiplier. So it's not just about how hard you hit, but also about when and where you hit. It's like a complicated dance routine - it's not just about the moves, but also about the timing and the rhythm.

The speed and type of your weapon also significantly impact your combat style. Faster weapons, such as daggers, allow for faster resolution of your skills, while slower ones, like two-handed axes, typically have higher damage ranges. It's all about finding the right balance that suits your combat style, kind of like choosing between a sports car and a tank - both can be fun, but in very different ways.

To sum it up, if you're considering playing Diablo 3 in 2023, the answer is a resounding yes. The game's distinct charm, replayability, customization options, loot system, engaging combat mechanics, and endgame content make it worth diving into. Whether you're a seasoned gamer looking for a new challenge or a newbie dipping your toes into the world of RPGs, Diablo 3 offers a compelling gaming experience that stands the test of time.

In my reviews, you'll find a smorgasbord of insightful analysis, peppered with tongue-in-cheek humor and the kind of sarcasm that only two decades of gaming can instill. So pull up a virtual chair, and let's chat about the time I beat a final boss with just 1HP remaining, or that time when I accidentally deleted my 300-hour RPG save.
